On June 23^rd 2026, the inaugural Nigeria Climate Investment Summit (NCIS) was held at Mansion House, City of London. A flagship event of London Climate Action Week (LCAW), NCIS presented a much-desired opportunity to discuss Nigeria’s climate policies and investment readiness, while establishing an important platform for funders, investors, subnational leaders, regulatory bodies, and Members of Parliament and other policy-makers to engage with the global green economy ecosystem. 

From renewables to carbon markets and other diverse opportunities across subnational levels, it is evident that one of Africa’s largest economies has positioned itself effectively for a just energy transition.

The Summit started with welcome addresses by the CEOs of GLOBE Legislators and SOStainability, Malini Mehra and Oke Epia, respectively. This was followed by words of welcome by the London host of the summit, Mr Ashutosh Shastri, Master, The Worshipful Company of Fuellers, City of London. Thereafter, the President of GLOBE Legislators, Rt. Hon. Sam Onuigbo set the scene for the main engagement by outlining the current policy landscape in Nigeria, highlighting the Climate Change Act 2021; the Energy Transition Plan; the Electricity Act 2023 and its series of amended versions; the Carbon Market Framework (NCMF); etc.

The next agenda item was a high-level keynote session with presentations by the Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu; Ms Damilola Ogunbiyi, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, CEO, Sustainable Energy for All; Co-Chair, UN-Energy; and Dr Tariye Gbadegesin, CEO, Climate Investment Funds.

The keynotes set the stage for panel sessions beginning with the one on Power, Energy, and Renewables: Opportunities for Investors, which was moderated by H.E. Catriona Laing CB, Former UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Somalia. Speakers were: 

• Mr Pablo Vieira, Global Director, NDC Partnership Support Unit  
• Mr Suresh Yadav, Director for Climate Change, Ocean and Energy Directorate, Commonwealth Secretariat 
• Mr Trevor Hutchings, Chief Executive Officer, Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA), United Kingdom  
• Ms Heather Buchanan, CEO & Co-founder, UK’s Bankers for NetZero  
• Dr. Wale Aboyade, Vice President, Public Policy and Government Relations, Sun King

The next panel discussed Climate Finance & Opportunities in Nigeria’s Carbon Market and was moderated by Dr Tauni Lanier, Sustainable Finance Architect & Climate Capital Thought Leader, with the following as speakers: 

• Dr Eugene ltua, Chief Executive, Natural Eco Capital  
• Ms Eniola Akinsete, Chief Sustainability Officer, Bank of Industry, Nigeria
• Ms Sagarika Chatterjee, Director, Finance, Technology, and Capacity-building, Climate High-Level Champions  
• Tayo Ajayi, Vice President and Lead, Climate and Sustainability Investments, Nigeria Sovereign Investments Authority (NSIA)  
• Helen Finney, Head of Carbon Market Programmes and Policy, UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

Both panel sessions were followed by a Spotlight on Nigeria’s Subnationals: Untapped Goldmine for Green Investments. The session featured presentations by the Enugu State Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, and by the Lagos State Governor, His Excellency Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Both speakers outlined the work their states are doing to create a conducive environment for investments in the green economy sector and pitched for investments.

The Summit was concluded with the big announcement by His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos Climate Action Week (LAGCAW) will be held later this year.

Another major outcome of NCIS London is the launch of GreenFinTel, a curated initiative to help track climate finance flows; build capacity of pertinent stakeholders to participate effectively in the climate economy ecosystem; support the creation of an enabling environment for climate investments; and engender accountability through institutional and community oversight of climate finance flows into Nigeria, Africa, and other emerging markets. 

The successful delivery of NCIS 2026 has set the stage for the sequel in 2027. GLOBE Legislators and SOStainability have invited expressions of interest to potential partners, sponsors, and collaborators at different levels.
